We know that families and community members may have questions and concerns, and we’re committed to sharing any important updates that we are able to. At this time, we are unable to issue any additional information than what we know and what we stated in the robo call.

At this time, we have a total of 3 active positive cases of COVID-19 in Medford, and each of those individuals remains in quarantine. 2 individuals who had previously tested positive and were in quarantine have since recovered. Additional information and updates are available at medfordma.org.

Hi, this is Superintendent Edouard-Vincent calling with important information regarding COVID-19 in the City of Medford and the Medford Public Schools.

The City was made aware this evening, March 21, 2020, that a parent of a child in the first grade at the Brooks Elementary School self-reported to school officials that the parent has tested positive for COVID-19. The student, who was not tested for Coronavirus, was in school on March 11 and March 12, with a cough but no fever. Again, this student was not tested, however their parent was tested by a physician and received a positive diagnosis on March 21. The City has not received confirmation from the Department of Public Health of this case, however, we are notifying the Brooks School family in the interest of transparency. The parent reports having only mild symptoms and both the parent and child have self-isolated since March 13.

Because the quarantine period for Coronavirus is 14 days, we ask that all students and staff who attend the Brooks School to self-isolate until March 27, which will be 14 days from the last day this child was in school. We further suggest that, to the greatest extent possible, any children who attend the Brooks School avoid contact with vulnerable members of the population – the elderly, persons with underlying health conditions, or those with compromised immune systems.

While COVID-19 is contagious, we urge families not to panic. In most cases, the symptoms associated with COVID-19 are mild and patients fully recover. If you do experience symptoms and you have concerns, please call your doctor. We do not have additional details at this time, but if any important updates become available we will be sure the community is given all the information we are able to share. Important inquiries can be directed to Maryann O’Connor the Medford Director of Public Health at moconnor@medford-ma.gov, but again please understand that due to privacy concerns for the family involved, we cannot share additional details at this time.

Schools will remain closed until at least April 6, 2020. We are constantly monitoring this quickly changing situation and will provide regular updates. For general COVID-19 updates, please visit medfordma.org.
