I hope that this email finds you and your loved ones safe and healthy. As the coordinator for this summer’s extended school year program, I would like to introduce myself and provide an update on our summer program.
Like you, I have been anxiously awaiting guidance from the Department of Elementary and Secondary Education (DESE) about whether this summer’s extended school year program will be remote, in person, or a combination of the two. Guidance released on Friday states that we should plan for remote instruction. In addition, DESE stated that if in-person ESY is permitted consistent with state re-opening plans and local health guidelines, DESE recognizes that it will only be available on a very limited basis, if at all. At this time, Medford is planning for remote instruction while also making contingency plans for a limited amount of in-person instruction should that become possible.
Based on DESE’s guidance, I am planning for remote instruction with the possibility of a limited amount of in-person instruction if this becomes possible. As I continue to make these plans, I would like to determine how you, the parents, guardians, and caregivers of our students feel about summer services during the COVID-19 pandemic. To determine your thoughts and feelings, I request that you complete this brief survey.
Please understand that the decision of whether the ESY program is fully remote, or a combination of remote and in-person will be based on guidance from DESE and our local health care leaders. As always, the health and safety of your children and our staff are of primary importance. Having said this, we are looking forward to working with your students, in-person, as soon as it is possible to do so in a safe manner.
I understand that you need information about summer programming as soon as possible so that you can plan accordingly. I will be in contact with information in the coming weeks.
Thank you in advance for completing this brief survey. If you have any questions, please feel free to contact me at the email address below.
All my best,
Suzannah Campbell, ESY Coordinator Summer 2020
