Lady Mustang Hockey Team Halfway Through Season

On December 13th the Medford High girl’s varsity hockey team kicked off the season hosting Matignon. The goal sheet was led by Matignon’s senior Courtney Hardy, scoring three goals, and Medford’s senior Summer Tufts, scoring both of the Mustangs goals. Matignon’s junior defenseman Emma Brennan scored a goal as well as Matignon was victorious 4-2.

Playing its first Northeast Conference game of the season, Medford hosted Masco. The Chieftains used two first period goals to skate to a 2-0 win at LoConte Rink. Masco’s sophomore goalie Molly Elmore earned the shutout.

The next day on an early Sunday morning the Lady Mustangs picked up its first win of the season at Bishop Fenwick with a 3-0 shutout. The goals were spread out with one goal per period with the goals coming from senior Mamie Powers, sophomore Erin Allan, and senior Summer Tufts. Junior goalie Terrell Pesaturo picked up the shutout with help from the defense of Julia Shanahan, Phaidra Martin, Abby Vigliotte, Caitlin Sheehey, and Bianca Sasso.

The Mustangs continued the winning three days later against Arlington Catholic. The Mustangs used three goals in the first period and three goals in the third period to earn win #2 6-1. Pesaturo continued her strong play in net, not allowing a goal in seven straight periods dating back to the Masco game.

Heading into the holidays Belmont and Medford faced off in Friday afternoon game. The Marauder’s used two even strength goals and empty net goal to win 3-1. Medford cut the lead to 2-1 when they pulled the goalie in the final two minutes and Julia Shanahan scored on a shot from the blue line that got past a crowd in front of the net.

With temperatures in the single digits, Medford and Lexington faced off on New Year’s Eve. The Minutemen won 3-0, with freshmen Julia Maimonis scoring all three goals. The game was part of Lexington Bedford’s youth in-house hockey day.

Playing their first game in 2018 Medford and Beverly met at Endicott College. The game entered the third period with the Panthers holding a 2-0 edge. In the third period the teams traded goals 2-1, 3-1, 3-2, and ended 4-2 Panthers. Abby Vigliotte and Brenna Forbes provided the offense for the Mustangs.

The temperature was minus six outside when the team traveled up route 128 for a tilt with Marblehead at Salem State University on a Sunday morning. The game was scoreless entering the third period when the Headers scored four goals. Pesaturo made 25 saves.

After playing three straight away games the varsity returned home vs. Waltham. Medford jumped out to a 1-0 lead when senior Julia Shanahan scored on a rebound from her own shot. The Hawks responded with four goals of their own in the second period. The final period had both teams trade goals, with senior Summer Tufts scoring her team-leading 5th goal of the season for the Mustangs.

Three days later the team traveled to Peabody for a Northeast Conference matchup. Tanner forwards Kathryn DiGiulio and Sammie Mirasola both scored two goals and netminder Jenny Collins recorded a shutout as Peabody won 5-0.

The Mustang roster includes Julia Shanahan, Alaina Giuliano, Jessica Crugnale, Sarah Whitehouse, Abby Vigliotte, Brenna Forbes, Brianna Swanson, Summer Tufts, Mamie Powers, Bianca Sasso, Bethan Taddeo, Erin Allen, Caitlin Sheehey, Elizabeth Lazzaro, Phaidra Martin, Rayanne Forbes, and Terrell Pesaturo.
